Puebla de Sanabria, Castile, Spain

Puebla de Sanabria is a small town located in the province of Zamora, near the border of Portugal in northwest Spain. It is the oldest settlement in this province dating back to 509AD, and being so strategically positioned on top of a high plateau between two rivers, it has witnessed many battles over the centuries. Recognized as a Historic-Artistic Site, the walls which once protected the town have been well preserved, and a magnificent 15th century castle, the Condes de Benavente, dominates the skyline. The castle had quite an enormous keep, all of which made it quite a stronghold, with a steep staircase that leads down to the river.

Near the castle is the decorative 13th century Romanesque-Gothic church of Neustra Senora del Azogue. Other impressive sites worth seeing are the 16th century Isabeline Town Hall, and the Hermitage of San Cayetano. There are also many ancestral homes and mansions that line its narrow streets, each decorated with their own coat of arms.

Parador Puebla de Sanabria The Parador Hotel Puebla de Sanabria is a modern 4 star hotel with views of the town, and is also only 12 km from Sanabria Lake Nature Park in the Sierra Mountains. With a seasonal swimming pool, and international cuisine specialising in local dishes, it is beautifully situated for those who enjoy being out in the countryside. There is also a medieval market that takes place near the Parador.

The Sanabria Nature Park is made up spectacular valleys, lakes and ravines. But the crystal clear waters of the lakes, and the beautiful mountain backdrop is only part of its breath-taking beauty. There are many historic towns inside the park that are great fun to explore, as well fabulous trails for those who enjoy hiking. In fact there is something for everyone with all sorts of outdoor pursuits such as horseback riding, canoeing and fishing.

The Sanabria Lake is the largest glacier lake in Spain, and has quite a story behind it. The legend goes that a small town lies at the bottom of it that was flooded because of a curse cast upon it, and on the night of San Juan it is said you can still hear the church bells ringing. Not far from the lake is the 12th century San Martín de Castaneda Monastery. Inside is a visitor centre all about the Nature Park, including information about the birds and plants, some of which date back to prehistoric times.

September is always a marvellous time of year to visit Puebla de Sanabria as this is when they celebrate the Festival of the Victorias with street parades and fireworks. If you come around Easter, make a day trip to the city of Zamora as there are several festivities at that time. Zamora is located on the banks of the River Duero, and is also an Historic-Artistic site. It was very well protected during the Middle Ages with a triple defence ring, and the first of these walls is almost entirely preserved. A stone bridge crosses over the river and takes you into the city where you will see some of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture.
